José María Figueres Olsen (born December 24, 1954 in San José , Costa Rica ) is a Costa Rican politician from the Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN).

Life

Figueres was President of Costa Rica from May 8, 1994 to May 8, 1998. He is the son of former President José Figueres Ferrer and diplomat Karen Olsen Beck . From 1979 to 2000 he was married to Josette Altmann Borbón .

In October 2004, José María Figueres attracted attention by resigning as CEO and executive director of the World Economic Forum for undeclared receipt of more than $900,000 in consulting fees from French telecommunications company Alcatel . Transparency International drew attention to this incident in its 2006 Global Corruption Report .
