Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Echeverría (born January 9, 1940 in San José ) is a Costa Rican economist and politician ( PUSC ). From 1998 to 2002 he was president of the country.

Life

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez studied economics and law. In 1966 he received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley . He then worked as a university lecturer. He was President of Costa Rica from May 8, 1998 to May 8, 2002. From September to October 15, 2004, he was Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS). He had to resign after just two weeks on allegations of corruption.

On April 27, 2011, he was sentenced to five years in prison for corruption. The court saw it as proven that, as president, he had accepted bribes equivalent to 541,000 euros to enable Alcatel to sign a $ 149 million cell phone contract with the Costa Rican Electricity Institute . The charge of unlawful personal enrichment could not be proven.
