Josette Altmann Borbón

Josette Altmann Borbón (born February 17, 1958 in San José , Costa Rica ) is a Costa Rican historian, former First Lady and, since 2016, Secretary General of the international social science education organization Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales .

Life

Altmann Borbón comes from a prominent Costa Rican family. Her father was Fernando Altmann Ortiz, her mother Marta Eugenia Borbón Zeller.She trained at the Anglo-American School and the Colegio Saint Clare in Cartago , studied for a while at Harvard University and received a degree in history from the Universidad de Costa Rica . On September 1, 1979, she married José María Figueres Olsen , who was President of the country from 1994 to 1998. She has two children with him; the marriage was divorced in 2000. She was initially a member of the Partido Liberación Nacional (PNL), but switched to the Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) in 2005 .

During her time as First Lady she promoted the improvement of socio-economically particularly weak communities ("Dieciséis Comunidades Prioritarias"). She was the director of the Centro de Desarrollo Solidario , a special program of the Costa Rica Foundation for Sustainable Development. As an author she writes about the political economy of Latin America, the immediate history and the political condition in Costa Rica. As a university professor, she taught at the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences at the University of Costa Rica. She received her doctorate from the University of Leiden for the dissertation Modelos de desarrollo, alianzas políticas e integración latinoamericana.

From 2006 to 2012 she was regional coordinator for international cooperation and director of the Observatorio de Integración Regional Latinoamericana (OIRLA) at the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) in Costa Rica. In 2016, she was unanimously elected by the 18 member states of the FLACSO as Secretary General for the period from 2016 to 2020.

Altmann Borbón has published several books, is co-editor and author of numerous academic articles. From 1995 to 1999 she had the weekly column “Punto de Vista” in the magazine La República , and as a publicist she published articles on political and social issues in the newspapers La Nación , La Prensa Libre , Semanario Universidad and Semanario Ojo .
