In Berlin he worked as a painter in the workshop of the brothers Jacques and Gerald Dagly. From there, Schnell was brought to Dresden by August the Strong in 1710 as a court lacquer artist , the same year in which the Meissen porcelain factory was founded, with which he worked closely until 1715. Schnell had specialized in decorating Böttger stoneware, the earliest Meissen porcelain, with gold and lacquer painting.
