Rafael David Saban
Rafael David Saban (born in Istanbul in 1890 ; died on July 14, 1960 there ) was the Grand Rabbi ( Chacham Baschi ) of Turkey from 1940 to 1960 .
Saban was the first Grand Rabbi after the founding of the Republic of Turkey . He was elected Grand Rabbi on January 25, 1953 with 54 out of 62 votes and was solemnly introduced to office on March 2, 1953. From 1940 to 1953 he acted as a substitute.
