history

In 1938, on the site of a former brick factory in Schwechat near Vienna, NOVA Oil and Fuel Company AG put an oil refinery into operation, which was large for the time. After several bombing raids during World War II, the refinery was reactivated and expanded by the Soviet occupation forces. After the conclusion of the State Treaty in 1955, the refinery became the property of the Republic of Austria, and a short time later the Austrian Mineral Oil Administration (ÖMV), OMV's predecessor, was founded. On April 22, 1958, the cornerstone for the expansion of the new refinery was laid, which was opened on June 27, 1961. In the following years the refinery was expanded and modernized several times.
