When frame clock is referred to clocks whose dials are used in a limited field of a picture frame. They were popular during the Biedermeier period and were often made in Vienna . This is a type of clock that in its original form did without pictorial representations. The often gilded wooden frame comprised a more or less decorated wooden plate or a gilded brass form in which the dial was inserted, sometimes the case of the clock had an ornamental or figurative crown. There is often an oval cutout below the dial through which the ornate pendulum is visible. In terms of their construction, the clockworks used mostly correspond to those used for other types of clocks in Vienna: Depending on the quality, they have an hour, half-hour or quarter-hour strike mechanism, which often has a repeater. Frame clocks in which machine figures are attached to the dial that move when the clock strikes, e.g. B. Blacksmiths striking their anvil. Viennese frame clocks were made from around 1820 to 1850. They are popular in the antique trade today, with the value largely determined by the condition of the gilding, which is often damaged or painted over.

The later, from around 1850, the Black Forest frame clock is a regional, cheaper version of this type of clock . As a rule, their dial was inserted into pictorial or ornamental representations without a harmonious connection. Lacquer shields, prints, photographs, reverse glass paintings and embossed brass shields were used for the shields. The eye- catchers are a special form of this variant of the frame clocks . Black Forest frame clocks have a typical Black Forest clockwork with wooden plates, unlike the Viennese frame clocks, they are not driven by springs, but by weights. The pendulum is also longer than in the Viennese clocks and hangs out of the case.
