Career

Rainer B. Zotz, who comes from the Austrian-German entrepreneur, artist and scholarly family Zotz , received his doctorate in 1983 after studying medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . He completed further training as a doctor for laboratory medicine at the German Armed Forces Central Hospital in Koblenz as well as internistic and clinical-chemical training at the University Hospital Essen . His habilitation included "Molecular-epidemiological studies for risk assessment in arterial and venous thrombophilia." Since 1994, Zotz worked as a researcher and doctor at the Institute for Hemostaseology and Transfusion Medicine (IHTM) at Heinrich Heine University.

research

His habilitation thesis showed new solution models for the identification, quantification and evaluation of molecular genetic and plasmatic risk factors of thrombophilia. "The solutions provide the basis for future risk stratification, especially for an individualized risk-adjusted prevention of thrombosis."

In 2007, Zotz presented an international study with 68,000 patients from 358 clinics in 32 countries, which revealed major deficiencies in the prophylaxis of thrombosis in hospitalized patients worldwide. According to the study, only half of all patients at high risk of venous thrombosis received adequate prophylaxis. 16 larger hospitals from Germany took part in the study.
