Ramón Oviedo

Ramón Oviedo (born February 7, 1924 in Santa Cruz de Barahona , † July 12, 2015 in Santo Domingo ) was a Dominican painter. Oviedo was considered one of the most important painters in the Dominican Republic, whose congress declared him Maestro Ilustre de la Pintura Dominicana .

He helped out in a photography shop when he was nine and was the first to publish caricatures in a local magazine when he was twelve to fifteen. In 1969 and 1970 he won first prize at the E. León Jímenes painting competition . In 1982 his mural Mamamerica was created at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Washington, DC , and ten years later the mural Cultura petrificada was created at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris . In 1997 he was honored with the Orden al Mérito de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella , the highest distinction in the Dominican Republic, and the French government made him Chevalier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres .
