Ram cruiser
As Rammkreuzer one was Military Ship type referred. They were created after 1866 by various navies. The Rammkreuzer wore next to heavy artillery as the main armament another Rammbug .
In the naval battle of Lissa on July 20, 1866, the Austrian Navy won the battle by ramming Italian ships into it. As a result of this battle, the navy returned to the ancient ramming tactic. In addition to the ramming cruisers, ramming monitors and ram ships were also built .
The big navies quickly abandoned the ramming tactic. Only economically weak countries kept these ships in their fleets as an alternative to the relatively expensive ironclad ships until around 1890. After 1890, however, the ram cruisers were only classified as pure artillery carriers ( protected cruisers 1st and 2nd class ) and were later decommissioned.
An example of the type of ship piling cruiser is the Esmeralda , Chile , 1882.
