Ranelagh Gardens (Liverpool)

Ranelagh Gardens was the first Pleasure Garden in Liverpool .

The complex was modeled after the Ranelagh Gardens in Chelsea , which at that time were still outside London. The name of the Liverpool garden is borrowed from the London garden, which was located next to the Ranelagh House built by the Earl of Ranelagh in 1688-89 .

The Liverpool Garden was opened in 1722. In the garden, the meeting point of the Liverpool society, there were walking paths, flower beds, ornamental trees and rare tree species in differently designed, closed areas. In the center of the garden there was an ornamental pond with carp, tench and other fish and stalls selling refreshments. Societies and concerts were held in the park itself. In order to be able to enter the garden, an entrance fee had to be paid, which excluded the poorer part of the population from visiting. The garden existed until the late 1970s, today the area is built over.
