Rangdum Gompa Monastery is a Buddhist monastery at the upper end of the Suru Valley in the southwest of Zanskar . The building made of clay and straw sits enthroned on a solitary rock at a height of 4030 m in the middle of the Rangdum plateau .
It was founded by Gelek Yashy Takpa in the 18th century and is now home to around 40 monks from the Gelug School . As a border post on the religious border between the Islamic and Buddhist parts of Ladakh , it is a transshipment point for trade between the Zanskar and the Suru valley .
