Raoul Follereau
Raoul Follereau (born August 17, 1903 in Nevers , † December 17, 1977 in Paris ) was a French writer and journalist. He is known as the "apostle of lepers".
Life
In 1942 Follereau learned about the fate of lepers in Ivory Coast from the Superior General of the Sisters of Notre Dame of the Apostles and has since devoted his life to combating this disease. In the same year, through his initiative, the first village for lepers was built in the Département d'Adzopé .
In 1954 Raoul Follereau introduced World Leprosy Day . In 1955 he wrote letters to the US President Dwight D. Eisenhower and to the Soviet Prime Minister Georgi Maximilianowitsch Malenkow and asked them to provide the price of a bomber for the healing of lepers.
Raoul Follereau was married to Madeleine Boudou from 1925.
The Raoul Follereau Foundation has continued its work since 1984.
