RasMol is software that allows macromolecules to be represented graphically, such as those that appear in the Protein Data Bank . The program was originally developed by Roger Sayle in the early 1990s, today it is further developed by a community at the ARCiB laboratory. In France, the program was recommended by the Ministry of Education and used in teaching at universities, technical colleges and high schools.

Example of a molecule (TRAF2 trimer PDB: 1DOA) in Rasmol

Historically, it was an important tool for molecular biologists, as the program made it possible early on to visualize molecules on home computers of the time . Because RasMol could already run on these computers and did not require mainframes that were not freely available due to their high acquisition costs, RasMol became and still is an important research tool in molecular biology . RasMol has a complex version history and from version 2.7 is under a dual license ( GPL or under the commercial license "RASLIC"). Along with BALL View, Avogadro , olekel , Jmol and PyMOL, RasMol is an open source program that can visualize molecules. RasMol has its own scripting language that was adopted by Jmol - therefore RasMol scripts also run under Jmol. Rasmol scripts can also be read out by Sirius. RasMol is available under Unix systems as well as under Windows . Under UNIX it can communicate with other programs via Tcl / Tk , under Windows via Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).

development

In the meantime, the software is hardly developed any further and the number of users is falling sharply.
