The RWF emerged from a rapprochement between the Rassemblement wallon (RW) of André Libert and the Alliance Démocratique Wallonne (ADW) (founded in 1985), which existed within the Parti Social Chrétien (PSC), and the Mouvement Wallon pour le Retour à la France .

In the federal elections in 2003, the party competed as RWF-RBF, and has always been as RWF since then. In the 2007 federal elections, she received 1.5 percent of the vote for the Senate and 1.2 percent for the Chamber. In the regional elections in 2009, the RWF received 1.37 percent in Wallonia and in the European elections in 2009 0.43 percent for the whole of Belgium.
