Buenos Aires City Hall

The City Hall of Buenos Aires (Spanish: Palacio Municipal de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires or Palacio de la Jefatura de Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires ) is the seat of the city administration in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires . It is located in the Plaza de Mayo .

building

The birth of a federal state in 1880 brought about a boom in foreign trade and a wave of immigration, which also resulted in an increase in the capital's population. The rooms on the second floor of the police headquarters, which had been used for local government since 1860, were therefore no longer sufficient and in 1890 mayor Francisco P. Bollini commissioned the construction of a town hall.

However, a slump in economic development, now known as the panic of 1890, also had an impact on tax revenues, which is why only a relatively modest building was planned. The austerity measures included the appointment of the Vice Minister for Public Works as chief architect and the decision to purchase the site for the now outdated police headquarters. For the interior, tiles and chandeliers from the neighboring Zuberbühler house were used, which should make room for the construction of the Avenida de Mayo .

The foundation stone was laid on January 31, 1890. The foundation stone contains both the building permit and other memorabilia. The construction cost 150,000 pesos (29,000 euros; as of April 8, 2010). The work was completed in 1892 and the building was inaugurated in March 1893. At that time the building had an area of 860 m², just a little more than the city council had at its old location. This problem was solved in 1911 with the acquisition of the neighboring property, which made it possible to enlarge the town hall to double its area. The extension was designed in the same style with French elements as the main house and carried out by the company Bonneu Ibero, Parodi & Figini. Completion took place in 1914. In 1988 a connection to the neighboring Casa de la Cultura was created.
