Rathmelsigi

Rathmelsigi was an important monastery of the Iroschottischen Church in the 7th century. It was, according to tradition in the region Connacht in Ireland .

history

In the 7th century, Rathmelsigi Monastery played an important role in the training of missionaries who were sent from Ireland on missions to mainland Europe. Under Ecgberht von Ripon, among other things, the training of Willibrord , Werenfried and Suitbert took place here, who, along with other descendants of the monastery, are venerated as saints in the Roman Catholic Church today.

The holy Benedictine Beda Venerabilis reports in his Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum that most of the inhabitants of the monastery fell victim to an epidemic in 664. Despite the outstanding importance of the monastery in the mission, its location has not yet been clearly clarified in research. Because of the known members of the monastery is also speculated in research, whether it may have been a convent of Benedictine acted.
