Ratibor (Polaben)
Ratibor , also Ratse or Ratze († 1043 ) was a prince of the West Slavic Polabians . He was the only leader of this tribe known by name.
Life
Ratibor was the velvet ruler of the general union of the Abodrites . He was the only representative of the Polabians who was mentioned in this capacity. Adam von Bremen reported:
“The Duke of the Slavs ( dux Slavorum ) Ratibor was slain by the Danes. He was a Christian and a very powerful lord among the barbarians. He had eight sons, princes of the Slavs, who were all slain by the Danes when they tried to avenge their father. "
.
Then the Abodrites went with their whole army to Denmark and plundered to Ripen . On September 22nd, 1043 there was the battle on the Lürschauer Heide.
Gottschalk became his successor as the ruler of the Abodrites .
The Icelandic Heimskringla saga from the 12th century also reported battles between a Slavic ruler Rettibur and Danes.
Ratzeburg
The name of Ratzeburg was probably derived from a Ratibor . Maybe he was the namesake.
