The rough vine weevil ( Otiorhynchus raucus ) is a beetle from the family of weevils and the subfamily Entiminae . The genus Otiorhynchus is represented in Europe with 77 subgenus, Otiorhynchus raucus is included in the subgenus Choilisanus .
features
The beetles are 5–10 mm long. The pronotum and elytra are strongly spherical. The latter are densely hairy and have clay-yellow spots. The wing cover seam is arched like a keel in the rear area.
distribution
The species is widespread in Europe. In the north, the occurrence extends to southern Scandinavia and central England, in the south to the north of the Balkan Peninsula , and in the east to Kazakhstan . The beetle species was introduced in North America. The first finds from Ontario date back to 1936.
Way of life
The species overwinters in the larval stage . The polyphagous beetles usually appear after pupation in early April. They are most commonly observed in the months of April to June. The species prefers the plains and valleys of mountains in Central Europe. Both the adults and the larvae are considered pests of various ornamental shrubs.
