Location of the Anta dos Olheiros in Portugal.

The Anta dos Olheiros is a megalithic complex just 6.5 km north of Castelo de Vide , in the municipality ( Portuguese Freguesia ) Santa Maria da Devesa in the district ( Portuguese concelho ) Castelo de Vide , Portalegre district in the northeast Alentejo .

Anta , Mámoa , Dolmen , Orca and Lapa are the common names in Portugal for the approximately 5000 megalithic structures that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the Cardial or Imprint culture .

Monument preservation

The Anta was first published in 1975 and cataloged again in 1986 as part of a prospecting . The first restoration and conservation work was carried out in 2003 , after the complex had been classified as IIP - Imóvel de Interest Público and placed under protection in 1997 .

A further archaeological investigation of the site is still pending.

Finding

The site is largely destroyed. Of the formerly seven granite support stones ( orthostats ) of the elongated polygonal burial chamber, only one support stone, which is strongly inclined inwards, has survived above ground. The six remaining bearing stones are all broken at ground level, but still preserved in situ in the ground . Two stones remain from the corridor that opens to the east. In addition, there are indications of a former hilltop ( mámoa ) of the grave, but the pending excavations can correct the picture if necessary. Despite the poor preservation, the Anta can be dated to the period from the end of the Neolithic to the Copper Age (3500–2000 BC).

Finds

No information is available about any discoveries made during the 1986 prospecting.
