Ravelry (derived from the English : to unravel  - unravel, separate, unravel) is a social network that was founded in 2007 by the married couple Cassidy and Jessica Forbes. In the main, the site provides a comprehensive tool for the organization of needlework such as knitting , crocheting , spinning and weaving . In addition, the members can share their projects and ideas and exchange ideas in groups and forums.

development

Founded in 2007 by the Forbes couple, the idea was to create a website for "yarn artists", that is, for people who spin, dye, design, knit or crochet yarn:

"Ravelry is a place for knitters, crocheters, designers, spinners, and dyers to keep track of their yarn, tools and pattern information, and look to others for ideas and inspiration."

The offer has been expanded over time; there is now the opportunity to discuss your own yarns, designs or even the finished products with others. Both private and commercial users can use the site for advertising purposes.

As of May 2015, over 528,000 instructions were managed in the instruction database, 34,592 of which are in German and over 155,000 are available free of charge. Many of these guides can be purchased and downloaded directly from the ravelry site, others are given the magazines or books in which they can be found. On February 28, 2014, the mark was exceeded by four million users. A year later there are already over five million users. Over 22,000 of them state that they live in Germany, 1700 in Austria and almost 1900 in Switzerland.

The user keeps his own notebook in which he can manage his yarns, tools, projects and instructions (books, magazines and individual instructions). When creating, he can fall back on central databases. These central databases are created and maintained by the community.

Such a concept is currently a unique selling point for this website. The databases can also be provided with images that can be integrated in various ways.

Access with mobile devices is also possible.

Revenue model

Ravelry has three monetary businesses. On the one hand there is the Ravelry mini market, which offers a small selection of products with the Ravelry logo. Furthermore, advertising can be placed and ultimately a real shop for knitting or crochet instructions (English: patterns). Members can sell their own drafts there, which must be available in PDF format. 98.7% of the proceeds go to the designers, the rest to Ravelry.
