Readback error

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A readback error is a source of errors in aircraft radio . Readback Error is defined as the significant difference between the clearance given by an air traffic controller to a pilot and the acknowledgment read back by the pilot.

The majority of readback errors are recognized and corrected by the air traffic controller (if this is not the case, the air traffic controller speaks of a hearback error ). Undetected readback errors can seriously impair air traffic safety. Readback / hearback errors are among the most common communication problems in aviation radio.

The cause of the problem is the human tendency to hear what one expects to hear. Air traffic controllers usually receive a correct readback from the pilot and therefore do not always recognize when the pilot is making a mistake. The problem belongs to the group of human errors .
