Real Ear to Coupler Difference

The RECD (Real Ear to Coupler Difference) is a term from audiology that is relevant for a certain type of adjustment of hearing aids to the needs of the wearer.

In order to check whether the hearing aid delivers the desired amplification for each frequency and intensity of the input signal , the resulting sound can be measured directly in the patient's ear or in an auditory canal model (coupler). As a rule, there are differences in the resonance and sound absorption behavior between these two measurement locations , so that the measurement in the auditory canal model can only reflect reality to a limited extent. In order not to unnecessarily burden the patient, it is advisable to use model measurements as a priority. The influence of the mentioned differences in the resonance and sound absorption behavior can be reduced if they are first measured in the form of the RECD (with a comparatively small expenditure of time) and then calculated from the results of the model measurement.
