Redbird Reef
The Redbird Reef is an artificial reef in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Slaughter Beach , Delaware .
The reef was created from discarded subway cars from the New York Metro , which are contaminated with asbestos (a risk that is considered to be low), but are gutted and sunk without windows. The first car went into the water in 2001; now there are more than 714, plus 86 retired tanks, as well as 8 tugs (ships) and other vehicles.
Initial criticism from environmentalists was largely dispelled. The reef's good development has made it interesting for divers as well as profitable for fishermen.
