The Reduta Theater on the Krautmarkt in Brno is one of the oldest theater venues in Europe that is still in use today.

history

In 1605 the city theater Neue Taverne ( Kleine Taffern ) was built here in Renaissance style. Regular performances were given from the 1660s onwards. It probably burned down in 1693.

From 1732 the Theater In der Taffern was rebuilt here and opened in November 1733 by Angelo Mingotti's opera troupe . Mainly German and Italian pieces were played. In 1767, eleven-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart gave a concert here with his sister Nanerl .

The theater was repeatedly destroyed by fires, which resulted in renovations. After a great fire in 1767–1768, the city rebuilt the building in the classical style. The main hall then extended over the two upper floors. After another fire in 1870, the theater was converted into a municipal market hall and only the concert and ball room was used.

The building, which was destroyed in World War II, was reconstructed for the Czech operetta scene in the 1950s according to plans by the architect Bohuslav Fuchs . In the early 1990s it was closed due to poor construction. After the renovation in 2005, it serves as one of the three venues of the National Theater in Brno.
