Cordast Reformed Church

The Reformed Church of Cordast is the church of the Reformed parish of Cordast . This covers the area of the Upper Lake District in the Swiss canton of Friborg .

history

The Protestants who immigrated to the Upper Lake District in the course of the 19th century were initially looked after by the pastors of Laupen, Ferenbalm, Kerzers, Kallnach and Murten. The preaching took place in the school houses in Gurmels and Courtepin, which were built with the support of Protestant aid organizations. Baptisms and communion celebrations, on the other hand, took place in Murten. This situation was unreasonable in the long term, which is why the employment of an own pastor and the construction of a church with a parish apartment were considered.

After the Great Council, with its decree of March 4, 1874, approved the establishment of the "Parish Cordast" for the Reformed population of the Upper Lake District, the foundation stone of the church was laid in the same year. On August 26, 1875, the young diaspora celebrated the inauguration of their church building, which is still simple today, consisting of a "prayer room" and a parish apartment. A year later, in 1876, the State Council approved the Protestants of Cordast to build a cemetery next to the church.

In 1899 the church building was supplemented by a free-standing classroom.

Architecture and equipment

Interior

The carpenter Josef Pfanner from Freiburg designed an oak baptismal table and the pulpit to furnish the simple and functional "prayer room" . The "prayer room windows" supplied by the glass painter Johann Jakob Röttinger were removed during a renovation in 1954.

Church tower and bells

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, a free-standing 19 meter high bell tower was built next to the church, which gives the church grounds its character. The small bell, which was previously hung in the roof turret of the church, was supplemented by two larger bells. The small bell bears the inscription «PAY FOR WHAT'S ABOVE AND NOT WHAT'S ON EARTH».
