Refusenik

Refusenik (from English to refuse , "reject") or Otkasnik ( Russian отказник , from отказывать , that is, "reject", Hebrew מסורבי mesorav ) was an unofficial Soviet term for persons, typically Soviet Jews , who were denied the opportunity to emigrate .

Development of meaning

The term got another meaning. Susan Sontag referred to the conscientious objectors of the Israeli army as refuseniks in her book listed below . The term is sometimes used in German in this sense.

Adaptations

An American documentary film , Refusenik , was made in 2007, directed by Laura Bialis, about the efforts and difficulties of the emigration of Soviet Jews.
