The Regius Professor of Electronic Engineering is a Regius Professorship for Electrical Engineering at the University of Surrey , founded in 2013 by Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her diamond jubilee .

History of the professorship

For the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, six Regius Professorships were originally to be donated. In a jury made up of academics and business people under the direction of the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, Graeme Davies, so many outstanding chairs were identified that ultimately twelve chairs were named as new Regius professorships.

According to the Cabinett Office, the most highly weighted criteria were the outstanding performance of the named institutions and the recognition that the research had achieved nationally and internationally, whereby the duration of the research should not be taken into account. Other factors included, for example, striking incidents in the history of the institution.

In the same year, Surrey was awarded the ELEKTRA, which honors the best universities in the field of electronics. Surrey had founded the first institute dedicated solely to 5G technology and secured an exceptionally high contribution from public funds with GBP 35 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Rahim Tafazoli, who has headed the Center for Mobile and Satellite Communication since 2000, was elected as the first professor in 2018.
