Range (raw material)
The range for raw materials indicates how many years a raw material will still be available. The static range is the time span in years for which the globally known and economically recoverable deposits of a non-renewable raw material will still be sufficient given current consumption . The dynamic range , on the other hand, is based on a model for consumption development, in the simplest case on the assumption of a constant annual increase in consumption.
The calculation of the range is based on the current state of knowledge and is only a snapshot of a dynamically developing system with various influencing variables:
- Future global consumption and the development of new deposits
- Technical developments that enable the development of previously unprofitable deposits
- Political and economic influences on the availability of raw materials
- Increased efficiency when using a raw material
- Substitution of raw materials, such as the replacement of copper by fiber optics in telecommunications and data transmission
- Unexpected fluctuations in the rate of production

Any quantities from recycling are not taken into account.
