Reidgotaland (Old Icelandic Hreiðgotaland ) is an area mentioned in prehistoric sagas , the prose Edda , in various old Norse poems and in the Nordisk familjebok . Its exact location is unclear. Maybe it was a name for different areas.

etymology

The name could be derived from the word hreiðr , which meant bird's nest . Another possible explanation of the name is the derivation of reið ( riding, traveling ). The second part of the name refers to the Goths or the inhabitants of Gotland .

Localization

The Hervarar saga extensively describes events in Reidgotaland. It possibly means the area of the Ostrogoths, since it represents a great battle with the Huns . But it is also possible that they were based in Schleswig.
