Travel agent is a dual training occupation . Travel agents advise and provide information in travel agencies about the offers of one or more tour operators or arrange individual offers such as flight tickets, hotels, rental cars, visas, etc. for private or business travelers. Travel agents also work for tour operators and are responsible for the design of package tours. The focus of this training is on trips abroad. The profession was previously called "travel agent". On August 1, 2011, vocational training was replaced by training as a tourism clerk.

The training to become a tourism clerk usually lasts three years, but on request it can be shortened to a minimum of two years if it is to be expected that the training goal will be achieved in the shortened time (§ 7 f. BBiG ). This is often approved if the trainee has a (technical) higher education entrance qualification with at least the grade "good". In purely formal terms, no specific school leaving certificate is required as an entry requirement. However, tourism companies mostly prefer applicants with at least a very good secondary school leaving certificate.

In the vocational school, tourism specialist knowledge is conveyed in particular, such as knowledge of the destination area, sales talks, the production of package tours, marketing or business travel management processes. In addition, commercial skills such as general economics , politics , data processing , accounting and language skills, e.g. B. trained in German and English .

Knowledge of English is required as some computer programs can only be used in English or, in some cases, it is necessary to communicate with customers and partners in English.
