Personalities

Viticulture in Givry

Givry owns one of the five community appellations on the Côte Chalonnaise and has 442 hectares of vineyards. 66 hectares of this are on Premier Cru sites . Wine from the eponymous municipality of Givry is sold under the appellation Givry, as well as wine from the neighboring villages of Jambles and Dracy-le-Fort.

The appellation applies to red wines made from the Pinot noir grape variety with proportions of Pinot Liébault and Pinot gris and for white wines from the Chardonnay grape, which is processed here with proportions of Pinot Blanc . The share of red wine production is around 10,700 hl, around 80%. Of the more than 20 existing Premier Crus are Les Grands Prétans , Clos Salomon , Clos Saint-Pierre , Petit Marole , La Baraude , Clos Marolle , Le Petit Prétan , Clos de la Servoisine , Cellier aux Moines , La Grande Berge , Bois Chevaux , Vaux and Vignes Rouges deserve special mention. The red 1er-Crus are exclusively wines made from 100% Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder).

King Henry IV (1553–1610) is said to have been a great friend of the wines from Givry; therefore you can often find his name on the bottle labels (Vin préféré du Roi Henri IV). His frequent visits to the city were more likely due to the visit of his lover Gabrielle d'Estrées , who lived in the nearby castle of Germolles. There is no historical record of the king's stay in the Château de Germolles.

Regular events

  • A wine festival, fête de la vigne, takes place annually on the first weekend in September.
  • On the third Saturday of January, the 'Confrérie des Chevaliers du Cep Henri IV' celebrates the traditional feast day ' Saint Vincent ' in honor of the patron saint of the French winemaker Vincent of Valencia , on which a winery of the Appéllation Givry holds the statue of Saint Vincent for one year and acts as the 'gardien de la statue' (guardian of the statue). In the morning, the statue is picked up at the previous year's 'gardien' and then taken to the church, where mass is held in honor of St. Vincent. Then the community with the statue goes to the operation of the new 'gardien', where an aperitif wine (mostly young Chardonnay) is served as 'vin d'honneur'. This has been followed by the annual banquet since 1967 in the salle des fêtes (event hall of the municipality of Givry), where many winemakers present their wines from Givry. The banquet is a very lively celebration, and every year new Chevaliers (knights) are accepted into the fraternity 'Confrérie des Chevaliers du Cep Henri IV'. For some years now, women have also been admitted to Givry.
