The Cistercian monastery La Ferté (Latin Abbatia Firmitas ) is one of the primary abbeys of the Cistercian order. The abbey was located in La Ferté-sur-Grosne , municipality of Saint-Ambreuil , in the Saône-et-Loire department in France .

history

The monastery was founded in 1113 as the first subsidiary of the Cîteaux monastery and, along with the monasteries Pontigny (1114), Clairvaux (1115) and Morimond (1115), is one of the four primary abbeys (founding years in brackets) of the Cistercian order , i.e. H. those monasteries that were founded as the first daughter monasteries of the original Cistercian monastery, the Cîteaux monastery . The monastery was fortified in 1415. It was sacked in 1562 and 1567 and set on fire in 1570 by Protestant troops from Gaspard de Coligny . In 1680 the monastery was in ruins. It was then painstakingly rebuilt in the style of the time. However, extensive destruction occurred in the course of the French Revolution , which also meant the end of the monastery.
