Hawick Equestrian Monument

The Hawick Equestrian Monument is a memorial in the Scottish town of Hawick in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In 1514 young men moved out of Hawick to put an English troop under Lord Dacre . They returned victorious from the battle at Hornshole, two kilometers away , and presented the captured English flag. Since 1923, a festival known as Common Riding has been held annually , in which the events are commemorated in a procession. During this, a standard guide on a richly decorated horse circles the city green.

description

A donation of £ 1,440 has been raised for the memorial. The hoped for £ 1,514 was not achieved. William Francis Beattie provided the design for the memorial to commemorate the battle won . This began work, but was used as an artilleryman in World War I and fell in October 1918. His father Thomas Beattie completed the memorial by 1921. Lady Sybil Scott , daughter of John Montagu-Douglas-Scott, 7th Duke, took over the ceremonial unveiling of Buccleuch . In the course of a road relocation, the memorial was moved a few meters in 2003, which led to protests by Hawick residents.

The statue shows a rider with a standard with a waving flag in his right hand. The horse's right leg is raised; his head is bowed. One side of the base shows the inscription “ERECTED TO COMMEMORATE THE RETURN OF THE HAWICK CALLANTS FROM HORNSHOLE IN 1514, WHEN AFTER THE BATTLE OF FLODDEN THEY ROUTED THE ENGLISH MARAUDERS AND CAPTURED THEIR FLAG.” The front of the base shows the city coat of arms and the year 1514 the inscription "TERIBUS YE TERIODIN".
