Rectal gill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rektalkiemen or intestinal gills are special respiratory system of the larvae of dragonflies (Anisoptera) and the Urlibellen (Anisozygoptera). These two groups are combined to form a taxon as Epiprocta .

There is an anal pyramid in the outer tissue of the rectum . In this anal pyramid, through which water is periodically pumped, are the rectal gills , which are used to absorb oxygen from the water ( intestinal breathing ). The anal pyramid is characterized by numerous longitudinal folds with open tracheal ends. The used air is expelled at the back and is used by most of the larvae of the dragonfly to move in the water.
