Remission (medicine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Remission ( Latin remissio from remittere "to subside", "to send back") means in medicine the temporary or permanent decrease of symptoms of illness of a physical or psychological nature, such as fever or pain, but without achieving recovery. The term is also used for chronic diseases such as epilepsy , rheumatism or for a favorable treatment outcome for cancer diseases .

The criteria for assessing the degree of remission are disease-dependent and variable. Work is still being carried out on standardization in many areas.

Application of the term

  • In the clinical area, the degree of remission in chronic diseases is generally used as a success parameter for treatment.
  • In oncology , one speaks of tumor remission or reduction.
  • In scientific studies it represents the so-called endpoints (objectively ascertainable treatment result). These are determined depending on the study.

Classification

  • As spontaneous remission is not regularly called expected healings that take place without medical exposure. This can lead to a relapse (relapse).
  • As a complete response is called the status, neither in the clinical (eg after therapy), radiological or any other signs of the disease over a certain period (eg. As 6 months) are present.

oncology

Typical endpoints (see above) in oncological studies are:

  • Complete remission (see above)
  • Partial remission (definition e.g .: "tumor volume reduced by more than 50%")
  • Minimal remission ("tumor volume reduced by 25–50%")
  • Stable disease ("change in volume by less than 25%")
  • Progression ("growth of the tumor by at least 25%")
  • The patient's death
