Remonstrantenkirche Friedrichstadt
The Remonstrantenkirche is a church in Friedrichstadt in the district of North Friesland . In addition to the Evangelical Lutheran St. Christophorus Church , it is one of the two large sacred buildings in the city and the only Remonstrant church in the German-speaking area. The building at Prinzessstraße 29 with an attached cemetery and parish hall on the opposite side of the street is still used today by the Remonstrant community. Dutch preachers regularly hold services in Dutch .
history
When Friedrich III. von Schleswig-Gottorf issued Octroy in 1620 for the establishment of a new trading town , which promised the new settlers not only land and tax privileges but also freedom of religion , Dutch remonstrants also accepted the invitation. Their services in their homeland had only been banned the year before by the Synod of Dordrecht . In 1622 Konrad von der Vorst was buried here. The first church was consecrated in 1625. Gravestones of the first generation of immigrants still stand in the cemetery.
When the first Jews settled in Friedrichstadt in 1675 , the Remonstrant community allowed them to use the church as they did not yet have their own synagogue. They were able to set up their own ritual bath there, which is no longer preserved today.
The originally three-aisled church building, which dates back to 1624, was destroyed during the Schleswig-Holstein uprising in 1850. The reconstruction in the years 1850 to 1854 enforced a new uniform and stylistically closed design, the church has been extensively restored. In 1863 Friedrichstadt counted 60 Mennonites, 80 Catholics, 100 Remonstrants and 250 Jews. Another 1900 Lutheran Protestants were statistically recorded in 1800.
architecture
The design of today's single-nave hall building, inaugurated in 1854, goes back to the Schleswig Royal Building Inspector Johann Friedrich Holm and the pastor at the time, Johannes Aletta Marinus Mensinga , and is based on the classicism of the 18th century. Externally, the church is reminiscent of buildings in the Netherlands. The interior follows the specifications of the Remonstrant commitment and is sparse with jewelry and discreet in color. The church manages without an altar, and a large cross is also missing. A raised central pulpit is centrally oriented towards the community. The organ gallery is located above the entrance area.
