René Harmant

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

René Harmant (life dates not known) was a French actor and comedian, singer and impresario.

Harmant came to Montreal from Europe in 1897 with his own theater company , which included Auguste Aramini and Henri Cartal . They performed with entertainment programs in Sohmer Park , in coffee houses and theaters. After an edict of the city banned appearances in coffee houses, Harmant took over the management of the Palais Royal , a house with 600 seats. Under pressure from the Ligues de Vertu à Montréal , which fought against the allegedly questionable morality of contemporary theater, Harmant went with his troupe to New York in 1905. There he recorded several titles for Edison Records , including Ils travaillent and Je me suis roulé . In 1912 he returned to Montreal.
