Esma Sultan (born July 17, 1778 in Istanbul , Ottoman Empire , † June 9, 1848 in Istanbul) was the daughter of Abdülhamid I and the sister of Mustafa IV and Mahmud II.

Life

Esma Sultan was born on July 17, 1778 as the daughter of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid I (1725–1789) and Ayşe Sineperver Sultan (1761–1828). She spent her first years in the Topkapi Palace with her family. She was the sister of Prince Mustafa (1779–1808), later Mustafa IV , and the sister (half-sister) of Prince Mahmud (1785–1839), later Mahmud II. In 1792 she was married to the Ottoman Admiral Kücük Hüseyin Pascha ( 1757–1803) married. In 1803 her husband died.

After the death of her cousin Selim III. her older brother came to power. Many reforms were carried out in her cousin's time, but Mustafa wanted to reverse them during his reign. Alemdar Mustafa Pascha (also Mustafa Bayraktar called) (1755–1808) was a staunch reformer and the driving force behind Mustafa's deposition. In his place, Selim was to come back to power, but Mustafa gave the order for Selim and Mahmud to die. Mahmud managed to escape by luck, Selim could not escape and died. Mustafa was deposed and Mahmud was the only male potential successor. Some Janissaries were so against Mahmud that they wanted to put Esma Sultan on the throne as the first female ruler of the Ottomans.

However, Mahmud managed to ascend the throne and Esma thereby secured her power. She gained great influence as Mahmud's favorite sister. In 1817, after the death of the Valide Sultan Nakşidil Sultan (also known as Aimée du Buc de Rivéry ; 1768-1817), the mother of Mahmud II, Esma took her place and became very powerful.

In 1839 her younger brother died. His son, 16-year-old Abdülmecid I (1823–1861), came to power in his place. Esma still lived and maintained her influence as the Sultan's aunt.

Esma Sultan died on June 9, 1848. She was buried in the same place as her brother Mahmud II.
