René Ngongo receives the Right Livelihood Award

René Ngongo Mateso (* 1961 in Goma ) is a Congolese biologist and ecologist .

Career

Ngongo first studied biology at Kisangani University and then completed a postgraduate course in educational science . He then worked in research at various universities in the Congo.

In 1996 he was the founder of the environmental organization, Organization Concertée des Ecologistes et Amis de la Nature (OCEAN), which is committed to protecting natural resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . For his long-standing commitment to protecting the rainforests threatened by deforestation and for social justice in his homeland, he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) in 2009.
