Republic of Tequendama

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Republic of Tequendama was a state structure established in 1934 by Colombian campesinos near the city of Viotá in the Departamento de Cundinamarca .

prehistory

In the first half of the 20th century , there was an increasing number of violent land occupations in Colombia by campesinos, farm workers and unemployed construction workers. The latter had returned to the country from the urban areas in order to base their existence there on the coffee industry. Since the large landowners refused to transfer ownership of fallow land, newly organized farmers 'leagues and farmers' cooperatives occupied the unused land.

"Republic of Tequendama"

The most famous of these occupations took place from 1934 to 1936 when they took over extensive coffee plantations and fallow land near Viotá, about 60 kilometers southwest of the capital Bogotá . On an area of 50 square kilometers, the occupiers established an "Independent Communist Republic", which went down in history as the "Republic of Tequendama". Its protected location in a region that was difficult to access for geographical and topographical reasons favored its existence. The Republic of Tequendama lasted for about 20 years.
