Reservatório da Patriarcal
The Reservatório da Patriarcal is an underground water reservoir in the center of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon .
It was planned in 1856 by the French engineer Mary and built between 1860 and 1864 below the Jardim do Príncipe Real . The purpose was to ensure the drinking water supply in the lower districts of Lisbon. It was fed with water from the Aqueduto das Águas Livres , to which it is connected via a drain from the Reservatório do Arco .
The reservoir consists of a brick cistern with a capacity of 880 m³. It is spanned by a vault supported by 31 pillars 9.25 meters high. In the park above, it feeds a fountain.
The water reservoir was in operation until the 1940s. At the instigation of EPAL and the Museu da Água , it was converted into a cultural space in 1994 by the architect Varandas Monteiro . The renovation was awarded the Prémio Municipal de Arquitectura the following year.
