By resolution 124 of the UN Security Council , the United Nations Security Council unanimously decided on March 7, 1957 at its 775th meeting to accept the state of Ghana , which had become independent the day before, into the UN . After the founding members Egypt , Ethiopia and South Africa , Ghana was the first African country to become a member of the world organization due to the incipient decolonization of Africa .
Eleven states participated in the vote: France , Great Britain , the Republic of China , the Soviet Union , the USA as permanent members, Australia , Colombia , Cuba , Iraq , the Philippines , and Sweden as non-permanent members of the body.
