The resolution of the 82 UN Security Council was a measure adopted by the United Nations Security Council on 25 June 1950th The resolution called on North Korea to immediately end its invasion of South Korea, which triggered the start of the Korean War . The measure was adopted with 9 votes in favor, no against and one abstention. It could only come about because the Soviet Union boycotted the UN Security Council and thus could not make use of its right of veto.
The Korean Peninsula had been divided between the occupying powers of the United States and the Soviet Union along the 38th parallel since the end of World War II . Each government tried to keep the government on its side of the occupation border, and when the Cold War began, tensions between the Korean parts increased. This culminated in an open war with the invasion of the north into the south on June 25th. During this time, the United Nations supported South Korea and considered it the only legitimate government. On the same day, the USA called on the UN Security Council to declare North Korea's actions as a breach of peace, whereupon the latter responded with Resolution 82.
The resolution called on the North to immediately stop its invasion and move its troops back to the 38th parallel. Since the resolution was viewed as a diplomatic victory for the United States, North Korea completely ignored it. This led the United Nations and the US to take further measures to prepare the state for massive international intervention and the expansion of the Korean War.
