Daniel Spoerri and one of his trap pictures

Traditionally, edible objects are presented on many still lifes like an invitation. Spoerri's work is a representation after a feast. In contrast to the classic, harmonious still life, plates with unsavory leftovers are arranged everywhere.

Typically for modern art, a new art form is being experimented with with the art genre of still life. In the hierarchy of the classic picture genres, after history painting , portrait , genre and landscape painting, the still life is in last, fifth place, since it is predominantly a representation of dead objects.

Because of the real objects, it is a three-dimensional work. The three-dimensional objects create a relief-like effect. Such a collage with the assembly of objects on a plate as a base is called an assemblage . This work is a tableau piège , in German a picture of a trap (tableau: painting, piège: trap). A piece of reality is trapped, fastened, as if caught in a trap. Trap pictures are material pictures with object montages and at Spoerri they are developed assemblages. With these works of art, Spoerri founded the Eat Art style . Her goal is to artistically capture real aspects of the everyday world. The objects are attached with synthetic resin.

In 1960 Spoerri was one of the founders of the Nouveau Réalisme . The aim of this group was: to approach the real with a new faculty of perception .
