Revit is a multi-design suite of technology from Autodesk for architects, building engineers , and structural engineers . Revit is not based on AutoCAD , but contains its own new graphics kernel . While Autodesk's base product, AutoCAD, is not object-oriented, Revit supports the new BIM ( Building Information Modeling ) technology. Revit consists of Revit Structure for structural engineering in structural engineering and building construction, Revit Architecture for building planning and Revit MEP for building technology .

The principle of Revit consists in supporting both 2D and 3D modeling of a component-oriented building model. When a change is made in the planning process, it is automatically carried out throughout the project so that designs and documentation are always consistent and complete.

Revit enables data exchange using the industry standard formats RVT, DWG , DXF , DWF . As an open system, formats such as IFC , gbXML and PDF are also supported for plan output.

Revit has been available on the German market since 2004. The structural engineering solution, Revit Structure, was released in July 2008. In Revit 2009, the AccuRender rendering engine was replaced by the mental ray rendering engine. Revit offers interfaces to Autodesk 3ds Max Design and Autodesk 3ds Max for the high-end visualization of projects.

history

The company Charles River Software was founded in 1997 and released version 0.1 of Revit in November 1999. Irwin Jungreis and Leonid Raiz are believed to be the original developers of Revit. The company was transformed into Revit Technology Corporation in 2000, which then released the 1.0 version in April 2000. Versions 2.0 and 2.1 followed in the same year. In 2001 the versions 3.0, 3.1 and 4.0 followed. Version 4.1 followed in January 2002 before Autodesk took over the product in early April 2002. A number of updates followed; by 2005 they had reached version 8.1. At this time Revit Structure was introduced, which provided tools specially designed for structural planning. Therefore, the terms "Revit Building" and "Revit Structure" were introduced for the branches of architecture and structural engineering. In April 2007, Autodesk carried out a fundamental change in the name of the construction-relevant products. All products based on AutoCAD were named "AutoCAD ..." (the program previously known as "Architectural Desktop" was now called "AutoCAD Architecture"). All products based on Revit were given "Revit ..." as a name. The designation "Revit Architecture 2008" was introduced for the predominantly architectural use and "Revit Structure" for structural planning.

Autodesk releases a new version of its products every year. The Autodesk fiscal year is used for the year of the versions . Therefore, the version released in May 2008 is called "Revit Architecture 2009".

In 2011 Autodesk supplemented the "Revit Story" with the product "Revit MEP 2012". Revit MEP is the building technology or TGA part, which in principle follows the same approaches as its pioneers Revit Architecture and Revit Structure.

With version 2013 Revit is available in corresponding software suites as "One Box". Autodesk bundles the entire "Revit story" with the parts Architecture, Structure and MEP in a single software.

The name Revit is derived from the abbreviations of the words "Revise Instantly". This designation is intended to indicate the ability of the program to apply changes made to all affected views immediately. If you change z. B. the position of the cutting line in a floor plan, the geometry in the section is updated automatically accordingly; If the section of a window is changed, the display automatically adapts to the corresponding floor plan, etc.

Collaboration tools for teamwork are already integrated in Revit. Here, a so-called central file can be made available in the network, on which the participants are assigned work areas. The data can also be accessed via cloud computing using the Autodesk360 service. Objects in Revit are represented by so-called families. These save their data as parameter sets. In general, parameterized data is provided in component families so that components can be used flexibly and e.g. B. to be able to adjust the dimensions of a specimen. In German-speaking countries, the DACH extension is available through additional plugins as a subscription customer. This extends the functionality of Revit to include national features such as B. Evaluation of the living space according to DIN 277.
