Rhenish Painting Museum (2009)

The Rheinisches Malermuseum in Bonn is a museum sponsored by a private association to preserve old and almost forgotten techniques and equipment of the painting trade for posterity.

Sponsorship and foundation

The first plans to found such a museum existed as early as 1979. With the founding of a "Förderverein Rheinisches Malermuseum Bonn eV" in 1985, more concrete planning for the design and financing could begin. Through their membership in the Friends' Association, retired painters in particular have taken care of the conception, construction and maintenance of the exhibition. The museum opened on November 10, 1989.

exhibition

The basis of the collection presented in the museum comes from the legacy of a Bonn master painter. The detailed representation of a painter's workshop around 1900 together with the tools, paint mills , brushes , paints and other equipment used at the time forms the center of the small exhibition. Various painting techniques are demonstrated using different designs for wall paintings, ceilings and facade designs.

The history of the Bonn guild of painting and varnishing includes another area of the exhibition. With the help of flags, certificates and invoices from the formerly independent guilds of Bonn, Bad Godesberg and the Rhein-Sieg district , the visitor gets an impression of the self-confidence of the painting and decorating trade in the Rhineland at that time. The original guild trophy made of silver - a work from 1896 - is the showpiece of this exhibition area.

location

The museum is located at Berliner Platz 35–39, in the old painter's hall on the second floor of a former vocational school. Today the separate building houses the gym of the now closed Pestalozzi School, a former open all-day special needs school. The athletes from the Bonn Box Club train there. The painted exterior facade from the Wilhelminian era is an eye-catcher and a widely visible advertisement for the museum.
