The Rheinmetall Neue Panzerkanone 140 , or NPzK-140 for short , is a smooth-barreled cannon with a caliber of 140 mm, which was developed by the German company Rheinmetall as the successor to the widespread 120-mm smooth-barreled L / 44 cannon . The development of the cannon was discontinued after the production of six prototypes and the associated impact projectiles .

History and technology

The development of NPzK-140 was inspected during the Future Tank Main Armament -Programms ( FTMA , dt. About future tank main armament ) initiated that of France , the United Kingdom , the United States was initiated and Germany.

In 1997, Royal Ordnance (now BAE Systems ), GIAT (now Nexter ) and Rheinmetall founded the joint venture RGR Armament GmbH in Ratingen . It was to take over the development, marketing and production of the cannon and the ammunition associated with it.

The cannon should have a muzzle energy of 20  megajoules (MJ), which would have doubled the muzzle energy compared to the L / 44. The cannon was to be provided with an autoloader, which would have made easy integration into existing battle tanks difficult.

After the use of the cannon would have meant the costly replacement of the turrets of the main battle tanks and at the same time a simpler - and sufficient - increase in performance of the L / 44 could be achieved through the development of the Rheinmetall 120 mm smoothbore cannon L / 55 and improved ammunition no introduction.

To date, the cannon has not been further developed to readiness for series production, but experience and materials that were developed for the NPzK-140 flowed into the development of the 120 mm smooth barrel cannon LLR / 47 on the one hand and into the demonstrator for a one presented at Eurosatory 2016 on the other The main armament of a future generation of battle tanks - the Rheinmetall 130 mm L / 51 weapon system  - with one.
