The Rhine Valley Charter was adopted on November 7, 1997 at the Rhine Valley Conference in Mainz . This conference was organized by the Rhenish Association for the Preservation of Monuments and Landscape Protection, with the aim of protecting the unique character of the cultural landscape on the Middle Rhine from Mainz to Bonn and of making demands for careful further development. This should also prepare for the recognition of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , which finally took place on June 27, 2002 by UNESCO .
