Rheotaxis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rheotaxis is the orientation of living beings to the flow of water. A distinction is made here between positive rheotaxis, where movement occurs against the current, and negative rheotaxis, in which movement occurs with the current. The positive rheotaxis is found much more frequently. In many organisms, active movement against the flow serves to compensate for drift losses , e.g. B. with gammarids .
